Floral foam, for those florists who choose to use it, is an essential supply item. There are two main categories, wet foam and dry foam. Wet foam absorbs water and must be used for arrangements created with real florals. Artificial florals can be used in wet foam that hasn’t been soaked, as well. Dry foam does not absorb water and can only be used with artificial flowers and greenery. Wet foam is often a finer texture and the particles feel like soft sand. Dry foam is a sturdier substance, with more coarse particles.

Floral foam can be very expensive and for florists creating with real flowers, they are only able to use a foam block once. We are an artificial floral designer, so we use our foam blocks over and over. We easily get 30+ uses out of a single block of foam before it needs to be swapped out. Nonetheless, when shopping for foam, we are always on the lookout for a good deal for this critical supply item.

We prefer to use foam this is in cages. This allows for more structure around the foam and provides a flat base. We look for foam cages that have the following specs:

  • Changeable, meaning the foam can be swapped out so the cages can be used again.

  • Openings on each side to hang the cage or use zip ties.

  • Nail holes on each corner to secure the cage to structures.

Below are the floral foam cages that we use and purchase in bulk.
